Counselor

Welcome to Mrs. McDougal's (formerly Mrs. K) Counselor page!

Please see my class Google Classroom for all the work that will be assigned  for each of my classes.

Hello!  My name is Mrs. McDougal.  I am the school counselor for the Elementary, Junior High, and High School. I was born and raised in Washington County, earned my bachelor's degree in Biological Science/Secondary Ed at SIU Edwardsville, and earned my master's degree in School Counseling at SIU Carbondale.  I joined Coulterville School District in January, 2018 and enjoy getting to know all of the students.  Thank you for being so welcoming and friendly and I am very glad to be part of the CUSD family.  I am also so happy to be part of the Coulterville community.  When I'm not at school I love spending time with my family, driving my vintage cars and truck, snuggling with my spoiled cat, and watching old movies.

I love working with all the students in the district and watching all the growth that happens every day! Helping high school students work out what their passions are and how they can turn that in to a career is so exciting.  Watching and helping the junior high students develop their value system and personal development is so rewarding.  The elementary students teach me as much as I teach them about being kind and interacting in our social world.  I am available to help any student work through whatever is bothering them.  I also do my best to share any opportunity I come across with the students no matter the age group.
If you feel you are in a mental health crisis and need to speak with someone (and I am not available), please call Comwell's crisis intervention line at 618-282-6233.  Dial 211 for information about mental health and substance abuse providers in your area.  Call the National Crisis Intervention Team at 988.  Text 988, if you would prefer texting a crisis intervention specialist.  If you feel there is immediate danger, dial 911 or go to your local Emergency Room.
If you feel your child needs the aid of counseling regularly, please feel free to contact me and/or complete the referral form below for Comwell and Livewell.  Email the form to me at [email protected] and I will pass it on to Comwell or Livewell, with whom we are partnering to have a counselor come to the school building when we are in session.  Please feel free to contact me with any questions, concerns, or guidance you might need.
Here are 6 common types of bullying:
  1. Physical bullying: This includes kicking, hitting, biting, pinching, and hair pulling, which can be especially harmful.
  2. Verbal bullying: Name-calling, spreading rumors, persistent teasing, and making threats are common forms of verbal bullying that can deeply affect children.
  3. Emotional intimidation: Deliberate exclusion from group activities, such as parties or school outings, can cause emotional distress.
  4. Racist bullying: Making racial slurs, mocking cultural customs, and engaging in offensive gestures can create a hostile environment.
  5. Sexual bullying: Unwanted physical contact or abusive comments can cause significant emotional harm.
  6. Cyberbullying: This involves threatening, harassing, or humiliating another child or teen through electronic means like computers or cell phones.
Here are the three R's of bullying prevention:
  1. Recognizing the signs of bullying, such as changes in behavior or unexplained injuries.
  2. Responding by offering support, intervening appropriately, and teaching assertiveness skills.
  3. Reporting incidents to trusted authorities to ensure that appropriate actions can be taken to address the issue and protect the well-being of all students.
